Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) Overview

1 min read

The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) is a key program designed by Canada to attract and retain international students by allowing them to gain Canadian work experience after graduation. Here’s what you need to know about the PGWP:

Eligibility Requirements #

  1. Program Requirements:
    • Must have completed a program at an eligible Designated Learning Institution (DLI).
    • The program must be academic, vocational, or professional, at least eight months long, and lead to a degree, diploma, or certificate.
    • Must have held full-time student status during every academic session of the program. (Note: The requirement for full-time status has been relaxed during the coronavirus pandemic for some students.)
  2. Graduation Confirmation:
    • Must provide a transcript and an official letter from the DLI confirming that all program requirements have been met.
  3. Institution Requirements:
    • Graduated from a public post-secondary institution (e.g., college, university, CEGEP).
    • Graduated from a private post-secondary school in Quebec operating under the same rules as public schools.
    • Graduated from a Canadian private school that can award degrees, provided the program leads to a degree authorized by the province.
Note: As of September 2024, students attending programs utilizing a curriculum licensing framework will not be eligible for a PGWP.

Duration of the PGWP #

  • Programs Under 8 Months: Not eligible for a PGWP.
  • Programs 8 Months to Less Than 2 Years: PGWP will be valid for the same length as the study program (e.g., a 10-month program will result in a 10-month PGWP).
  • Master’s Programs Less Than 2 Years: PGWP valid for 2 years (updated in 2024 to allow a 3-year PGWP for qualifying programs).
  • Programs of 2 Years or More: PGWP valid for 3 years.
  • Multiple Programs: If combining Canadian educational programs, the PGWP duration corresponds to the total length of the combined programs, provided each program is over 8 months and eligible.

Application Deadline #

  • Apply for the PGWP within 180 days (6 months) of obtaining the transcript and official letter from the DLI.
  • If your study permit expires before you receive your final marks, you can:
    • Apply for a visitor record to extend your stay in Canada, or
    • Leave Canada and apply for the PGWP from abroad.

Required Documents #

When applying, you will need:

  • An official transcript and a letter from the DLI confirming program completion.
  • Proof of holding a valid study permit or authorization to study in Canada.

Special Policy for Distance Learning #

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, international students who study online from abroad or whose study permit applications were submitted by August 31, 2022, can complete up to 100% of their program online without affecting PGWP eligibility. However, from September 1, 2023, time spent studying online from abroad will be deducted from the length of the PGWP.

The PGWP provides a valuable opportunity for international graduates to gain work experience in Canada, which can enhance their chances of obtaining permanent residency through various immigration programs.
