What’s it like to work abroad as a contractor?

Fulrez offers a range of services, including permanent and contract recruitment, global mobility, executive search, consultancy, and managed services. This provides a complete package of workforce solutions for our clients, who can rely on us for tailored support that meets their specific needs. Our services also benefit the contractors who find work through us, as we help set them up in their new roles and assist with travel, visa, and tax issues that come with relocation.

In this blog, we explore what it’s like to embark on a career that involves working and living abroad. We caught up with two contractors, Kevin Godden and Iwan Jones, who found work through Fulrez to hear how we support them and what life is like in Europe during these challenging times.

It’s a rainy day here, but it’s bright and sunny in Rome, where Iwan Jones, an Engineering Manager, is currently based. Iwan is no stranger to international assignments, having lived in Georgia, Turkey, the Middle East, and India. He even prefers being out of the UK during winter because it helps with his asthma. Knowing the Italian language made settling into his new role in Rome much easier.

When asked about life in Italy during the COVID-19 pandemic, Iwan explained that while Italy was one of the first European countries to implement strict measures, infection rates in Rome are now under control. Life operates normally, aside from wearing masks on public transport and in shops.

It’s a similar situation in Madrid, where Kevin Godden works as a Procurement Manager. “Madrid has managed the pandemic very well in my opinion,” Kevin shares. “Certain areas in the city require permits to enter and leave. The city is well-policed, and masks have been mandatory for some time. Bars and restaurants operate with restrictions, and you must book a table. The metro is less crowded since many people are working from home, which makes commuting much easier.”

Kevin’s role involves working both from home and the office, a structure he’s found effective. The oil and gas industry, where both Kevin and Iwan work, has adapted well to the global challenges, maintaining operations with minimal disruptions.

Of course, working abroad can be challenging, particularly being separated from family during uncertain times. Iwan says, “My children have inherited my adventurous nature. We’re all used to me working abroad; I’ve been doing it for years. My children have traveled extensively themselves.”

Kevin agrees. “No matter where I’ve worked, family has always been able to visit me.”

When asked about the best place he’s worked, Kevin mentions Russia. “It’s like living in London but safer and more cosmopolitan. I’ve also worked in Serbia and the Arctic—unbelievable experiences where I’ve seen amazing things.”

A career in industries like oil and gas often means frequent travel and relocation. It takes adaptability, but the benefits are enormous: exciting and lucrative work, opportunities to explore the world, and the chance to be part of multi-billion-dollar international projects using cutting-edge technology.

Both Kevin and Iwan also praise the diversity of their colleagues, who come from all over the world, bringing a wealth of skills and experience. Iwan notes that the industry is making strides in gender diversity, with more women joining in recent years and companies ensuring equal opportunities and accommodations for them.

At Fulrez, we’ve been proud to support Kevin and Iwan in their careers. Our dedicated team handles everything from onboarding to tax consultations, making transitions smoother for our contractors. For Iwan, our guidance on Italian tax systems was especially helpful, enabling him to make informed decisions about his new role.
